CHÂTEAU TROPLONG MONDOT

2000 Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru Classé

Deep ruby in colour, with juicy acidity that balances out the abundant sandalwood and cedar oak notes, although this is ever so slightly drying on the finish. Bitter chocolate, pencil lead, crushed rocks, black cherries, has impact and is hard to argue with, but expect a broad-shouldered wine even at 22 years old. The firm tannic architecture is still in full swing, and this has a good few decades ahead of it. First vintage for technical director Rémy Monribot. 100% new oak, Michel Rolland consultant. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jul 2022)

The 2000 Troplong Mondot is another vintage that I have not tasted for a long time. This includes some Cabernet Sauvignon that was north-facing and subsequently removed for the 2001. The youthful bouquet of black cherries, cassis, marmalade and blood orange is vibrant and precocious and shows fewer secondary aromas than some of its peers. It opens nicely to reveal camphor and star anise aromas, almost Rhône-like. The palate is chewy, quite dense and backward but initially lacks a bit of charm. Licorice and sloes come through. Slightly granular in texture, it feels tight at first, but it deserves applause for its freshness and improves with aeration, loosening up and finally developing that missing charm. Drinking range: 2021 - 2038 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2021)

Extremely young with an unbelievable deep purple color, the 2000 Troplong Mondot has hardly budged since I tasted it in 2003. Two recent tastings confirmed that this is the greatest Troplong Mondot between their profound 1990 and more recent vintages such as 2005, 2008, and 2009. Copious chocolate, graphite, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, and ink characteristics are present in this full-bodied, powerful, massive St.-Emilion. While the tannins are noticeable, they are better integrated than they were seven years ago, and the fruit, extract, and richness clearly outweigh the wine’s structure. This 2000 will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring (longer than I originally predicted), and has at least two decades of drinkability ahead of it. Drinking range: 2014 - 2034 Rating: 96 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Jun 2010)

Good saturated ruby-red. Expressive, thoroughly ripe aromas of blackberry, violet and game. Sweet on entry, then lush and densely packed in the middle, with terrific depth of flavor and backbone. Very ripe yet cool flavors of blackberry, espresso and licorice. A powerfully constituted wine that will need a good decade of bottle aging. But, in contrast to the 2001 and 2002 vintages, here the strong tannins are beautifully distributed and fine. A great success for this chateau. Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2003)

Château Troplong Mondot

Château Troplong Mondot sits at the top of Mondot, the escarpment to the east of Saint Emilion which gives magnificent views over the vineyards and the Dordogne, neighbouring Château Pavie (which was once part of the estate). Troplong Mondot is one of the biggest and most famous of the Saint Emilion Grand Crus. The impressive château dates back to 1745 and was built by the Abbé de Séze and gained the name Troplong from Raymond Troplong, a previous owner, who was a former president of the French Senate. The vineyards of Château Troplong Mondot cover 74 acres and lie on limestone and clay with patches of flint and some of the vines are over 90 years old. The grapes grown are 80% Merlot, 105 Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Troplong Mondot's wines are full bodied, fruit driven and a bluish purple colour. They have notes of blackcurrant, coffee, earth, vanilla, pepper and plum. They are rich, dense, well structured and classic wines which age gracefully and should be cellared.
