Tasted in May 2011 at the release of the 2009 vintage, and alongside the 2007 and 2003 vintages of the same, this showed beautifully, and merited an almost perfect score of 10/10. Still brooding, but so wonderfully complete and focussed, this is in the same mould as great vintages such as 1966 and 1963. A keeper. L&S (Jun 2011)

The Fonseca 2000 retains that intense focused nose that is “stricter” when contrasted against the Croft. The fruit is slightly darker with dark cherries, pomegranate, blackberry and melted tar. The palate is medium-bodied with a vibrant, lightly peppered entry, good weight and focused tannins, not an opulent or flamboyant Fonseca compared to other vintages, rather biding its time to offer delight in another decade. Superb. Tasted May 2011. Rating: 96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2011)
Exceptionally dark crimson. Luscious prunes in Armagnac on the nose. Well integrated and very hedonistic. Super luscious but with a real structure to it. Dry liquorice finish. Very dry finish indeed actually but pretty promising for the future. 18 Drink 2024-45 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2011)
Dense ruby/purple-colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scaled, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonseca's standards). Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025 Rating: 95-100 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2007)
Fonseca
Manuel Pedro Guimaraens bought out the Fonseca family's share of Fonseca & Monteiro in 1822, sold with the proviso that the Company would always bear the Fonseca name, and the Guimaraens family have controlled Fonseca ever since, even after absorbtion by Taylors, Fladgate & Yeatman in 1948. Not long after taking control of the Company, due to his support of the deposed King Pedro IV, Manuel was forced to flee Portugal (allegedly in an empty wine barrel) and settled in London, from where Fonseca was run until 1927 when the Guimaraens family returned to Portugal. David Guimaraens is the winemaker today, not only at Fonseca but Taylors too. In recent years especially, Fonseca and Taylors have elevated themselves clearly above their rivals for the sheer quality and prestige of their Vintage Ports.
