Huge colour here too. Interesting nose: more spice and texture, less simple fruit. Structured and fine, dense and rich, but also a fine pure wine. Fruitcake on the finish. Very long. L&S (Mar 2005)

The 2001 Canon-la-Gaffelière has a fresh nose of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, cigar humidor, fireside hearth and light minty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity, fresh and vibrant, and harmonious toward the finish, offering finer tannins than the 2000. This has aged beautifully and will continue to give pleasure. Cropped at 21hl/ha and aged in 85% new oak for 18 months. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2021)

Now this has a lovely bouquet, quite generous with dark plum, Hoi Sin, raspberry leaf and a touch of leather. This is now firmly moving into its secondary aroma stage. Very fine delineation, fresh and enticing. The palate is medium-bodied with a Burgundian texture on the entry. This has very fine tannins, a feminine Saint Emilion with tart red cherries, sage and thyme, then the structure makes its presence felt towards the finish with notes of sandalwood and mocha. This is definitely the finest bottle of Canon-la-Gaffeliere that I have met Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2011)

Made in a structured, tannic, restrained style (representative of the vintage's overall personality), this medium to full-bodied 2001 exhibits scents of espresso roast, cedar, chocolate, black currants, and cherries. With sweet but noticeable tannin, exceptional multilayered flavors, and excellent texture, elegance as well as purity, it will be at its finest between 2005-2013. Rating: 92 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Nov 2005)
