With 150 grams per liter of residual sugar, the 2001 Suduiraut is showing elegantly today with a delicate, mature bouquet of apricots, spices, candied orange, saffron and pineapple. Medium to full-bodied, it has an elegant and round palate and a somewhat metallic character, and it’s long and fresh with delicate notes of quince in the finish. This blend of 90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc was matured for 24 months in oak barrels (40% new, 30% one year and 30% older). Drinking range: 2014 - 2044 Rating: 93 Yohan Castaing, www.robertparker.com (Jun 2024)

The 2001 Suduiraut has a very well-defined bouquet of marmalade, honeysuckle, touches of kerosene and pine, all focused and vigorous. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and vibrant, featuring Seville orange marmalade mixed with orange peel, peach and wild honey; it displays a little more delineation than I have noticed compared to previous bottles, and great cohesion and persistence on the finish. Excellent. Drinking range: 2021 - 2048 Rating: 95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2021)

The 2001 Suduiraut has long been one of the standout wines of the era. It shades the future vintages up to 2006 with copious dried honey, quince, marmalade and yellow flower aromas that gain intensity with each swirl of the glass. The palate is very fresh on the entry with layers of botrytised fruit tinged with orange zest, tangerine, guava and Seville orange marmalade. There is a sense of cohesion and ambition to this 2001 that you could argue was not fully realized on a consistent basis until the end of the decade. Wonderful. 150gm/L residual sugar. Tasted at the Suduiraut vertical at the château. Drinking range: 2019 - 2026 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2019)

Château Suduiraut

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 The de Suduiraut family lived on their estate in Preignac at least as far back as 1580. In the later years of the 17th Century, a dispute with the local Governor led to the château being flattened. In response, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut rebuilt in lavish manner, with gardens laid out by King Louis XIV's designer. Since the de Suduiraut's time there have been many owners, but today it is in the very capable hands of AXA Millésimes. The 92ha of vineyard are planted with 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. There is a second wine, which takes its name from a neighbouring estate that was absorbed into Suduiraut in 1831, and is called Castelnau de Suduiraut.
