DOW

2003

IN STOCK
Origin Portugal, Port
District Vintage Port
ABV 20%

Really powerful, deep, rich and warm. Less floral than the Graham's or the Warre's 2003. More peppery. Chewy but smooth. Dense with a chocolatey finish. Deep and generous with the tannins adding to the freshness, which is just right for completeness and balance. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 18 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2024)

Full ruby. Knockout nose features black cherry, blackberry and licorice pastille. Rich and sappy on the palate, with a suave, velvety texture and unusual power for a young Dow. Flavors of kirsch, minerals and licorice are not at all overly sweet. In fact, this is ultimately quite taut, focused and powerful, with a very firm core of fruit. Finishes firmly tannic, highly aromatic and quite long. A 2003 of outstanding purity and precision, in need of 15+ years of aging. May ultimately merit an even higher score. Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2006)

Dow

Now owned by the Symington Family, Dow had an unusual beginning as in 1798 Portuguese merchant Bruno da Silva left Portugal and travelled to England, importing his wine over to sell. In 1862, Bruno's son John da Silva created a partnership with Frederick William Cosens and formed Silva & Cosens. The firm expanded and were eventually joined by another partner, George Acheson Warre. The company continued to thrive, and in 1877 merged with yet another port company, Dow & Co, headed by James Ramsey Dow. Silva & Cosens took on the highly respected Dow name, and simply traded under Dow & Co.
