Very dark fruit expression, sloes, damsons, blueberry. A slightly blunt attack, the palate very round and sweet-tasting. Full and very attractive, with sophisticated tannins on the finish. Rating: 90 L&S (Apr 2006)

Big colour, big gutsy full-bodied, spicy Saint-Estephe, rich and earthy with robust fruit. Drink 2009-18. Rating: ***/16 www.decanter.com (May 2006)

Aromas of tar, ripe fruit and dried herbs. Full-bodied, with a good core of round-textured tannins and a long finish. Friendly wine. Nicely done. Rating: 89-91 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (May 2006)

Very ripe and focused and intense on the nose. Surprisingly gentle for a St-Estèphe. The polar opposite of the Phélan Ségur - almost disconcertingly smooth. Competent but ultimately a bit workmanlike. Full, round, easy - just slightly too flattering on the palate perhaps but awfully easy and full of charm. Another airline (ie early maturing, please-all) wine? Certainly no shortage of fine 2005 tannins. Very dry finish. Well done. 2009-18 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2006)

Château Meyney

Chateau Meyney in St. Estephe has a long history starting in the 1662, when it is mentioned in records as a convent, making it one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. It occupies a gravelly bank facing the Gironde and is a neighbour of Montrose.

The 51 hectare vineyard with vines averaging between 35 and 40 years old is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. The gravel based terroir has a large streak of blue clay close to three metres thick.

In 2004, Meyney was bought by CA Grands Châteaux, also owners of Château de Rayne Vigneau and Château Grand-Puy Ducasse. They have employed Hubert de Boüard as consulting oenologist.
