The 2005 Suduiraut is such a classy wine. Crème brûlée, orange marmalade, vanilla bean, mint, apricot, honey, hazelnut and truffle lend a sense of exoticism throughout. The 2005 is unctuous but not heavy. It perhaps lacks the dimension of the very best years, but that in no way detracts from the pleasure it provides. To be perfectly frank, its hard to put the glass down. Drinking range: 2021 - 2025 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Suduiraut has been a curious vintage, the bottles perhaps a little more inconsistent than ensuing years. Here, the bouquet takes a while to get going, eventually settling with dried honey, quince and a touch of baking powder. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, delivering notes of orange rind, Clementine, white pepper and a slight nuttiness that becomes more conspicuous towards the finish. To be honest, I think a better Suduiraut could have been made in this propitious growing season and three or four bottles have tasted better in the past. 163gm/L residual sugar. Tasted at the Suduiraut vertical at the château. Drinking range: 2019 - 2050 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2019)

Medium yellow-gold. Incredibly sweet aromas of apricot, acacia honey and marzipan. Supersweet, round and fat, but with enough ripe acidity to leaven the wine's huge impression of volume. A powerfully fruit-driven Sauternes with superb depth, but it's almost too rich today. Finishes with palate-staining sweetness and length and surprisingly fresh acidity (I suspect the actual acid number is low). I'd give this 15 years in the cellar. This is carrying a high 165 grams per liter of residual sugar, and the percentage of new oak was raised from a normal 35% to 65% for this vintage, and yet the wine does not come across as woody. Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2008)

The improvement here continues unabated. The nose shows a terrific perfume and unctuousness plus great breed. The wine has great concentration and opulent fruit - a glorious wine with a wonderfully honeyed finish. Rating: ***** www.decanter.com

Château Suduiraut

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 The de Suduiraut family lived on their estate in Preignac at least as far back as 1580. In the later years of the 17th Century, a dispute with the local Governor led to the château being flattened. In response, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut rebuilt in lavish manner, with gardens laid out by King Louis XIV's designer. Since the de Suduiraut's time there have been many owners, but today it is in the very capable hands of AXA Millésimes. The 92ha of vineyard are planted with 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. There is a second wine, which takes its name from a neighbouring estate that was absorbed into Suduiraut in 1831, and is called Castelnau de Suduiraut.
