CHÂTEAU RAYNE VIGNEAU

2006 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé

Very lovely indeed, with a bright sweetness and lush texture. Fresh, balanced and with good length, this finishes fresh and bright. Drinking well but will develop well for a decade. L&S (Oct 2011)

Tasted blind at Southwold ’06 Bordeaux tasting. This has improved immensely since their barrel showing. It has a fresh, floral nose that is lacking some botrytized fruit: tangerine, white peach, quince jus and a little hazelnut. Good definition. The palate is viscous on the entry, good weight here, good depth with a waxy texture. Spicier than others, a touch of marmalade and clear honey towards the finish which has good length and really clings to the palate. Lovely. Tasted January 2010. Already clear and pretty light gold. Rather pungent and tangy. Interesting. Not heavy but clearly a fine expression of the vintage - some greenness but not skinny. Very lively with good attack even if not for the long term. Clean. 2010-20 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com

Château Rayne Vigneau

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 The owners of the estate in the 17th Century (a Gabriel de Vigneau appears on deeds as far back as 1635) were the de Vigneau family. In 1834, the estate was purchased by Catherine Marie de Rayne. On her death, Château Vigneau passed to her brother and it was his son Albert de Pontac who attached his aunt's name to the estate. Today, Château Rayne Vigneau is owned by CA Grand Crus (a subsidiary of Crédit Agricole) who also own Grand-Puy-Ducasse in Pauillac and Meyney in Saint Estèphe. The 80ha vineyard overlooks the River Ciron, and is composed of 74% Semillon, 24% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. The wines are fermented in wood and aged for up to 18 months.
