CHÂTEAU RIEUSSEC

2006 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Origin France, Bordeaux
District Sauternes-Barsac
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 13.5%

The 2006 Rieussec is a blend of 94% Semillon, 3% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle picked between 5 September and 10 October. The bouquet is a little smudged at first with marmalade and quince aromas, bit it soon clarifies in the glass to deliver the first signs of secondary aromas of beeswax and lanolin. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous opening, a little more angular than the 2007 with barley sugar, quince and a touch of spice, though just like the 2007, I feel it does not quite deliver the persistence on the finish that you might expect. Nevertheless, this remains a fine Rieussec to enjoy over the next 20-odd years. Drinking range: 2017 - 2037 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2017)

Honeyed copper colour. Quite heavy, spicy and pungent. Quite forward. Very rich and attention-grabbing. Just a little nervy note on the finish, but good stuff! Drinking range: 2014 - 2030 Rating: 18 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2010)

This is big, rich and long. Still tastes like must. Hard to taste, but should be fantastic. I love the richness and spice. Rating: 92-94 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator

I have to take this wine to some extent on trust, because the sample was a dark orangey colour and the nose was not together. But there was more purity on the palate with great concentration and complex fruit flavours to suggest that this will follow the line of fine and great vintages since the 2001. From 2011. Château Rieussec

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 For several generations, Château Rieussec has been a leading name in Sauternes wines. As early as 1868, Charles Cocks remarked that “Beyond any of the others, Rieussec produces wines that are very similar to Yquem wines”. The modern history of Rieussec, and the beginning of a remarkable rennaissance, starts with the purchase of the estate by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984. A new winery was completed in 1989 and yields restricted to maximise quality. There are 92ha of vineyard, planted with 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrels from DBR's own cooperage. Aging is 18 to 26 months depending on the year, including 55% in new barrels.
