2006 Saint Estèphe

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv, Petit Verdot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
ABV 13%

This is a property on the move. Now under the same ownership at Montrose, and same winemaker as Haut Brion this is not surprising, and is now a real contender as one of the great buys of the Medoc. The 2006 is quite gorgeous and flirtatious, immensely attractive already and opens up voluptuously in the glass. L&S (Apr 2011)

A very tight nose but good delineation with blackberry, liquorices and a touch of wet sand. The palate builds on its promise from en primeur – succulent black fruits, good tannic structure, fine acidity, great weight, modern in style as I recall with a smooth texture and a supple finish with great persistency. The oak has suffused into the texture of this wine beautifully. Excellent. Tasted February 2008 Rating: 90-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2017)

A blend of 59% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2006 may be the finest wine I have ever tasted from this estate. It exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, sweet red and black currant notes intermixed with notions of damp earth, forest floor, and roasted herbs, medium body, and an elegant, sensual, sexy personality. Drink it over the next decade. A sleeper of the vintage. Tronquoy Lalande is now under the ownership of the telecommunications wizard, Martin Bouygues, who quickly hired retired Jean-Bernard Delmas ,formerly the winemaker at Haut-Brion, to make this wine as well as that of his flagship estate, Chateau Montrose. Rating: 88 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Feb 2011)

Château Tronquoy

Since being established in 1791, Chateau Tronquoy (they dropped the Lalande in 2018) was one of the very first vineyards of the Saint Estephe appellation. From the outset aits founder was a proudly independent spirit, and François Tronquoy refused to take part in the 1855 classification.
Today this exceptional vineyard runs to 30 hectares in a single block, running down to the banks of the Gironde estuary. It is a terroir hat proudly abuts some of the greatest properties in the area, sited on the celebrated Terrace 3 - which also has some of Cos d'Estournel's vines, Some of Lafite's vineyards and of course 'big brother' Chateau Montrose's vines. They have developed a very thoughtful approach to their work in the vineyard, and the estate was certified organic from the 2024 vintage onwards. This is just part of their strong commitment to biodiversity which has seen the development of 800 meters of hedgerows, 100 new birdhouses, 100 bat shelters and 6 beehives.
The estate is owned and the wine is produced by the same team that is responsible for Chateau Montrose.
