MONTECASTRO

2006 Bodegas y Vinedos Montecastro

Grapes Tinto Fino
Colour Red
Origin Spain, Ribera del Duero
ABV 14.5%

Predominantly Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) with 3% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, from vineyards ranging in age between six and one hundred years of age. Fermented in concrete tanks and aged for eighteen months in a combination of French (70%), American (25%) and East European (5%) oak, half of which is new and half one year old. Deep in colour and richly spiced on the nose, the first impression is of oak, but this is soon dissipated by the concentrated mineral fruit which gives wonderful drive through the palate. Full bodied, yet lifted and a great pleasure. L&S (Nov 2010)

Saturated ruby-red. Powerfully scented bouquet of smoky red and dark berries, Asian spices and minerals. Supple and concentrated, offering deep black raspberry and blackcurrant flavors, velvety texture and a late jolt of tangy minerals. Vanilla and cherry-cola qualities cling impressively on the long, sappy finish. This is quite primary but also very promising. Rating: 92 (+?) Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2011)

The 2006 Montecastro is a glass-coating opaque purple with an alluring nose of pain grille, earth, mineral, and assorted black fruits. On the palate it has plenty of depth, layered fruit, savory flavors, and impeccable balance. Give this lengthy offering another 2-3 years of aging and drink it from 2012 to 2026 Rating: 91 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Dec 2010)

A plush texture carries plum, blackberry, hoisin and mineral in this modern red. Firm tannins keep it grounded, while lively acidity keeps it fresh. The first impression is oaky, but fruit, spice and licorice notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2012 Rating: 90 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Nov 2010)

Bodegas y Vinedos Montecastro

Montecastro is a new estate in Ribera del Duero founded in 2002. The owners have gone to great lengths to do everything right and it shows in the wine. They own five separate vineyard parcels in the heart of the region, with vines ranging from 6 to 100 years of age. Under the supervision of a young French trained oenologist, Jean Francois Hebrard, the wine has already reached some international acclaim, and they are well on the way to making it one of Spain's top wines.
