The 2008 Fleur de Gay has a dark hue with a thin brick rim. The bouquet is intense with blackberry, boysenberry, cedar and a touch of truffle that seems to gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin and is perhaps missing some depth and grip. There is a sense of introspection on the finish and fades prematurely. This Pomerol often performed to high level on its youth...I wonder if it had a shorter shelf life than anticipated? Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting. Bright red-ruby. Complex nose offers mulberry, pipe tobacco, caramel, camphor and chocolate. Sweet, lush and fat with fruit; the seamless flavors of ripe mulberry and spices offer considerable early appeal. Finishes long, with very suave tannins. Drink over the next 10 to 15 years. This could turn out to be the finest La Fleur de Gay since the incredible duo of 1989 and 1990. Made from 35-year-old Merlot vines planted on the plateau of Pomerol, sandwiched between the renowned Lafleur and Le Gay, the dense purple-hued 2008 exhibits aromas of sweet black raspberries, blueberries, graphite, charcoal, and subtle wood. The wine displays a sensational texture, tremendous purity, and a remarkably long finish of nearly 50 seconds. There is no aggressiveness, the tannins are ripe, and the wine’s acidity provides crispness as well as precision.
