The 2008 Cortona Syrah Il Bosco comes across as quite focused and primary in this vintage, with layers of black fruit lurking beneath a wall of imposing tannin. The 2008 is a cool, inward Il Bosco that needs a few years in bottle before it begins to show the full breadth of its potential. For now, the wine's sheer depth and textural richness makes me think the future is bright. Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com
Dried berries, spices and Cameroon black pepper on the nose. Full body, with round and velvety tannins and intense raw meat and dark fruits on the palate, that turn to black pepper. Hints of new wood too. A big and rich Syrah. This needs at least three to four years of bottle age still. Rating: 95-95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com
Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro
Massimo d'Alessandro is passionate about the Rhone and Syrah in particular. Having long since identified the 'terroir' and micro-climate of his Cortona vineyards as being almost identical to that of the Northern Rhone, he imported the best Viognier and Syrah clones, densely planted in the early 1990s, and set about making the best wines of the region. His Syrah is now rated world-class, particularly in vintages such as 2001 and 2004.
