2008 Bordeaux

Grapes Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Bordeaux
ABV 13.5%

Another fabulous vintage of our now well known and much loved Lea & Sandeman Bordeaux, which offers such great value. This is not a generic Bordeaux blend, but from a single property bought by two young 'negociants' we have worked with for some years. Deep fruit, bright tannins and fresh acidity. L&S (Jun 2011)

Congratulations to L&S – if anyone is making a better own-label claret I have yet to taste it. Fresh and alert, pin-prick precise, what I want to drink with a late lunch of cold roast meat or a smart kitchen supper. From the flatlands of Fronsac and worth laying in by the case. Superb. Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph(Dec 2012)

From vineyards close to Fronsac. Made by oenoloist Nicolas Dabudyk. Rich crimson. A little leafy but juicy too. Lively and good-value claret. Just a little dry on the finish. Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, 2012)

Supple and approachable, but with a little touch of astringency to remind us of its origins, this Merlot-dominant blend is a classic, old-school luncheon claret given a ripe-fruited modern update. The Wine Gang - 2012)

Basic Bordeaux doesn't get in this guide very often, [Oz Clarke's 250 Best Wines] but there's basic Bordeaux - and there's Lea & Sandeman's basic Bordeaux. These guys have gone to a very good producer in the classy area of Fronsac and blended up a wine that is so ripe it's almost rich. This has the leafiness and furry tannic grip of proper Bordeaux, yet it has the ripe red plums, blackcurrants, the dryness of summer country earth, and the promise of scent if you open the bottle an hour or two early, which would make me think it's a very attractive Fronsac at about half its normal price.
