Quintarelli is always in pursuit of excellence and so if they feel the vintage is not perfect they do not release any Amarone - the same wine is instead labelled rather humbly Rosso del Bepi. Brilliant wine at a fraction of the potential price if labelled differently! The palate delivers bright fruit, cherry kirsch and strawberry, polished, long and oh so beautifully fresh. L&S (May 2018)

Giuseppe Quintarelli's namesake 2008 Rosso del Bepi (made well before this legendary figure would pass away in 2012) is made in the so-called average vintages when Amarone is not produced. This wine replaces Amarone in those declassified years, meaning that we see Rosso del Bepi made in 2008 and next again in 2010. The estate's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, however, is produced in 2009 and 2011. The final decision on which wine will be released is made just a few months before bottling. In very difficult years, neither wine is produced. I have reviewed the 2008 vintage currently on the market now, although the 2010 vintage of this wine was shortly to be released when I visited the estate (but I did not get a chance to taste it). This wine reflects the ideals of a classic blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella (with a smaller percentage of other varieties mixed in for good measure), although you do feel some of the extra heat of the vintage, with some lingering sweetness on the close. The wine registers at 15.5% alcohol, and there are ripe nuances of dark fruit, sweet cherry and jammy blackberry. The wine is immediately open, accessible and beautiful, but like all of Quintarelli's releases, it would also benefit from additional ageing. Drinking range: 2019 - 2038 Rating: 93+ Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Sept 2019)

In 2008, Quintarelli did not bottle Amarone, but instead chose to declassify the juice into Rosso del Bepi. Fragrant and expressive, with a good deal of aromatic nuance, the Rosso is a terrific choice for readers who want to explore the Quintarelli style, without splurging for one of the flagship Amarones. Drinking range: 2017 - 2027 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2017)

Quintarelli

Quintarelli is without a doubt the reference point for wines from Valpolicella and the Veneto hills. In fact this historic estate makes some of the world's finest wines, hugely sought after by wine-lovers in every continent. We are delighted to be representing them now in the UK and sharing these spell-binding creations with our customers. The estate came to prominence during the 60 year career of the legendary Giuseppe 'Bepi' Quintarelli, a visionary man who must be credited with reviving this historic region through the production of his incredible wines. The mantra here is 'tradition and time'. These wines are never rushed - they are given as much time as they need in the cellars, to hit their stride, before bottling and releasing to the market. A prime example is the Valpolicella Classico - the estate's calling card - we are just shipping the 2010 vintage, the latest release, a mere 8 years on from the harvest! Most 'Classicos' are drunk a year or 2 from the harvest! In the pursuit of perfection here, the family's patience is an invaluable virtue. Old barrels, cool cellars, traditional methods, patience and soul are the keys here - and the results are extra-ordinary. Sadly the Maestro 'Bepi' passed away in 2012, but thankfully his spirit lives on and his daughter Fiorenza has taken the reins with her two sons: Francesco and Lorenzo and her husband Giampaolo. They are respecting all that the great man achieved and any tweaks are proving to be both positive and minimal thankfully - purely designed to improve the consistency of the wines and raise the profile of this incredible gem.
