Also not harvesting too late" La Mauriane shows a very oaky nose, but behind it is a lovely mineral freshness, intense delicate cherries, fine tannins but serious structure too. Impressive stuff - it is big (14.2%) but the balance and freshness he gets from this limestone-rich subsoil keeps the balance and direction. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2010)

Superbe nez intense, fin, fruité, mûr, subtil. Notes de réglisse et figue. Devient crémeux à la décantation. Bouche dense très fruitée, mûre, savoureuse, pleine et grasse. A deep inky, purple hue. The nose is better defined than I expected with black cherry, cassis and plum, the palate dense, opulent with bold assertive tannins and grippy black fruits. La Mauriane is a small vineyard within Château Rigaud, a Puisseguin-St-Emilion property owned by Pierre Taïx, who owns a few other properties in Puisseguin and the neighbouring Côtes de Castillon. La Mauriane is a micro-cuvée, made by Pierre, who is a university lecturer (economics) in his other life. One of the three parcels that make this extraordinary wine consists of eighty year old vines planted by his grandfather. The vineyard here is farmed organically. 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
