Impressive deep purple to black. Surprising nose, oaky, warm ripe cherries. Very full, very rich palate full of opulent verve. Really excellent. Nicolas Thienpont is involved in the wine-making here now, and the change is already evident. Rating: 91+ L&S (Apr 2010)

The 2009 Poujeaux has a very pure bouquet with more red fruit than black, quite high toned with crushed violet scents emerging with time, almost Right Bank in style. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin, and well judged acidity. A little heady in style with some warm alcohol towards the finish. Decadent for a Moulis but enjoyable, though I suspect the 2010 is the safer long term bet. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits' Ten Year On tasting. Drinking range: 2020 - 2032 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2019)

The staple of the classic cellar and the serious collector, red Bordeaux is re-mortgage pricey at the very top end. Look beyond the bigger cru classé names, however, and plus it can be affordable if not cheap, and Poujeaux's lushly fruited 2009 will keep for more than a decade. April 2013.David Williams, The Observer (Apr 2013)

(50% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 5% each petit verdot and cabernet franc): Bright ruby-red. Cassis, blueberry, graphite and smoky oak aromas are lifted by a floral element. Broad, rich and enveloping, with a restrained sweetness to the pliant flavors of dark berries, spices and graphite. Layered, minerally and long, with firm, building tannins coating the front teeth. Really splendid density and texture for Moulis wine, and a great vintage for Poujeaux. This large chateau, among the finest properties in Moulis, was purchased in 2008 by Philippe Cuvelier, who also owns Clos Fourtet. The same team of manager Nicolas Thienpont and enologist Stephane Derenoncourt was responsible for superb 2009s at both estates. Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2012)

Château Poujeaux

Château Poujeaux sits on the Grand Poujeaux, a Gunzian gravel mound of similar constitution to the more illustrious communes of the Haut-Médoc. Alongside Château Chasse-Spleen, Poujeaux is one of the leading estates in Moulis and offers great value to the discerning Haut-Médoc consumer. Moulis sits a little way back from the Gironde, between Saint Julien and Margaux. 16th century records show that the estate was owned by Gaston de L'Isle, then owner of Chateau Latour, although this is some time before wine production began at Poujeaux during the 19th Century. Since 2008 Château Poujeaux has been owned by Philippe Cuvelier, also owner of Saint Emilion estate Clos Fourtet. There are around 100 hectares of vineyard planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
