We are in full on classic Pauillac territory here, sculpted and balanced juicy blackcurrant and bilberry fruits, great lift on the finish, one of best value wines of the tasting, sleek tannins, studded with freshly cut herbs and charcoal. For a long time the 2009 was the best of the two vintages at Batailley, but the 2010 is now taking the lead. 55% new oak for ageing, Philippe Casteja owner. Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Batailley starts off quite cedary/oaky, opening out to reveal notes of preserved plums, blackcurrant cordial and new leather with touches of pencil shavings and bay leaves. Full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid structure of firm, chewy tannins and loads of freshness framing the herb-sparked black fruit, finishing a little firm. The 2010 Batailley has a vivacious, outgoing and quintessentially Pauillac nose with blackberry, mint and graphite bursting from the glass and demanding attention! The palate is medium-bodied with ample black fruit laced with graphite, sage and cracked black pepper. Wonderful depth and grip here, fanning out nicely towards the finish where there is a soupçon of oak still to be subsumed, therefore give this another three or four years. (78% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot, 2% petit verdot and 1% cabernet franc; 13.5% alcohol) Bright, dark red. Floral, fruity aromas of red berries, plum, red cherry and minerals, with the fruit element intensifying with aeration. In the mouth, bright red berry and sweet spice flavors are joined by a strong mineral quality and lifted by sound, harmonious acidity. Finishes light and lively, with good length and smooth tannins, but this wine has real substance and sneaky concentration. Rating: 90-93 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (May 2011)

Château Batailley

Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 The name "Batailley" appears to be derived from a battle that occured on the sight in 1453 during the Hundred Years War. During the early 19th Century, Batailley was owned by Daniel Guestier who did much to raise the reputation of the estate such that it was rated a 5th Growth in the 1855 classification. Batailley was purchased in 1932 by François and Marcel Borie who divided the estate between themselves in 1942, with François taking the half that became Haut Batailley and Marcel continuing as Batailley. Marcel's daughter married into the Castéja family, who own Batailley to this day. The two Batailleys are in the south of Pauillac, a little way inland from the Pichons. The 57ha of vines are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Wines spend up to 18 months is wood, with 55% being new every year.
