(15%): Bright ruby-red. Slightly roasted, exotic aromas of cassis, licorice, coffee and bitter chocolate. Densely packed, concentrated and high-toned, with just enough acidity to give shape to the lush flavors of currant, plum, licorice and spices. Finishes with a hint of toffee. I'd enjoy this sexy wine over the next seven or eight years. Rating: 88 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2013)

This estate, which was purchased a few years ago by Swiss entrepreneur Silvio Denz, continues to push the envelop and improve on what was already an impressive group of wines from previous proprietress Corinne Guisez. From a 50-acre vineyard in the commune of St.-Christophe des Bardes, the 2010 is a blend of 85% Merlot and the rest mostly Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Perhaps the most powerful wine ever made at Faugeres, it tips the scales at 15% alcohol. Both Michel Rolland and Stephan von Neipperg consult at this estate. The 2010's dense blue/purple color is followed by notes of creosote, toasty new oak, licorice, blueberry liqueur and cassis. This dense, opulent, full-bodied, massive effort is surprisingly civilized and intense. It should drink well for 10-15 years. 2011-2026 Rating: 91-94 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (May 2011)
Deep inky-ruby Good lift to the aromas of plum, Asian spices and flowers. Supple and intensely flavored, with a silky texture to its red fruit and spice flavors. This graceful wine finishes subtle and long, with a lingering tarry presence. Rating: 88-91 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (May 2011)
This is very ripe with a veil of glycerine on the nose, sweet vanilla and a touch of macerated dark cherries. The palate is very sweet, almost cloying on the entry, the new oak prominent and dominant towards the alcoholic finish. Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2011)
Château Faugères
Château Faugères spreads across the appellation divide between St Emilion and the Côtes de Castillon and, consequently, produces examples of each. Long time in the ownership of the Guisez family, Faugères was bought in 1995 by Swiss businessman Silvio Denz who, together with his friend Comte Stephan von Neipperg and well-known consultant Michel Rolland, have driven the estate's reputation forward. To this end, more vineyards have been purchased and a brand new state of the art winery built. Four wines are produced at Château Faugères - the "grand vin", Château Faugères, 85% Merlot; a second wine, Haut Faugères; a super-premium 100% Merlot Parker-pleasing wine, Cuvée Spéciale Péby, named after Péby Guisez; and the produce of their Côtes de Castillon vineyards Cap de Faugères.
