MENCIA

2010 Verdes Matas Ribeira Sacra Adega Pena das Donas

Grapes Mencia
Colour Red
Origin Spain
Sub-district Ribeira Sacra
ABV 12.5%

Native Mencia from fifty year old vines, in a beautifully crafted fashion, with very precise fruit and fine structure (think best Gamay moving towards Pinot Noir). Lots of red berry fruit, soft tannins and a juicy finish making this very easy to drink. Aged four months in a combination of French and American oak to round off the wine without losing its typical fruitiness or imparting oak flavours. L&S (Dec 2011)

With its vineyards dating from Roman times, the region of Ribeira Sacra, in mountainous Galicia, is one of the most exciting and breath-taking areas in Spain for utterly compelling, modern and unique wines. I say modern because the flavours and fruit purity of both the godello whites and mencia reds here are as bright and resonant as can be. Many of these wines are artisanally farmed from ancient vines, on terrifyingly steep plots of land. This spectacular (destined to be cult) red is made from 50 year old vines and the flavour is somewhere between a juicy pinot noir and a serious barbera with a Beaujolais weight (or lack of) on the palate. With pristine red and black fruit notes, a touch of liquorice and violets and a dexterity that is unnerving, you can drink this striking red right now (chilled if you wish). Thanks to its light oak regime and fresh tannins it is remarkably versatile with food. Try their 2010 Godello Almalarga too, because it is also a stupendous wine with crunchy pear and almond fruit and lime juice acidity. Adega Pena das Donas

The Ribera Sacra is an ancient land of valleys and monasteries, but the DO was only created in 1996, and this is the only Galician region which specialises in red wines, notably from the Mencia grape, as well as making beautifully crafted whites from Godello. Pena das Donas is a relatively new estate, although the five hectares of vineyards they have acquired on the incredibly steep, terraced banks of the meandering River Sil are between eighty and one hundred years old. These are among the best Godello and Mencia wines we have tasted, so pure and precise in their execution, making them truly world class.
