CHÂTEAU LA CONSEILLANTE

2011 Pomerol

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol
ABV 14.5%

Jean-Michel Laporte remarked that the main issue in the vinification was to avoid drying the wines out. Since the signature style here is freshness that is hardly surprising. He dropped the proportion of new wood to 80%. 2011 Conseillante is 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc. They made a reasonable 42hl/ha yield, but there is less Grand Vin after selection, as the young vines did suffer from the drought. Good deep bright glossy purple colour. Silky, with an exotic dry desert-bazaar spiciness. Lots of pure spicy blackcurrant juice too, which carries the length nicely, although the drying tannin is there on the finish. Lifting the power pedal means the wine is a little slighter than top vintages too, but very attractive for all that. Rating: 92 L&S (Apr 2012)

Very deep purple. Very fragrant and seductive. Very sweet and medium body. Thick texture and a suggestion of foxgloves on the nose. 2018-2030 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2012)

Made in the elegant, finesse-filled Bordeaux style, the 2011 La Conseillante displays a deep ruby/purple color along with hints of acacia blossoms intermixed with sweet cherry and mulberry fruit backed up by subtle toasty oak. Attractive on the attack and medium-bodied with good acidity, the 2011 is not a blockbuster such as we saw in 2009 and 2010, but it may resemble the estate’s top-flight 1981 (a so-so year in which La Conseillante produced a delicious wine). It will provide early drinking and should last for 10-12 years. 2012 - 2024 Rating: 88-91 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2012)

The La Conseillante is a blend of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc. It has a very well defined bouquet with attractive dark berry and mulberry aromas, the terroir really coming through with subtle notes of black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied and I think Jean-Michel has really achieved very the filigree tannins this year, rendering this the most feminine La Conseillante I have tasted. It is silky smooth and yet there is certainly a tensile structure that should see it age nicely over 15-20 years. It is very composed, almost understated towards the finish, but this shows great persistency in the mouth without being overpowering. A “controlled” La Conseillante” with just a elegant, beautiful finish. Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2012)

Château La Conseillante

Château la Conseillante’s origins lay in an estate called Domaine de Mautretat that was broken up in the early years of the 18th Century with reverend gentleman called M. Léglise purchasing the part that became Château l’Evangile whilst Catherine Conseillan took the other. In 1871 Château la Conseillante was bought by the Nicolas family who own it to this day. With only the addition of a small plot of vines in 2014, the estate has remained the same ever since. The 12ha of vineyard are planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards border Petrus to the north, and one can gaze across l’Evangile and see the vines of Château Cheval Blanc. Indeed, a small part of la Conseillante’s vineyard strays across into St Emilion, but is included in the main Pomerol cuvée. Château la Conseillante is a well-executed balancing act marrying tradition with modernity, something exemplified by the new cellar that opened in 2012.
