60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot. Fulfilling the promise it showed en primeur, this has medium colour depth, a harmonious, quite gentle, maturing fruit nose, and a supple, fat feel which spreads the flavour smoothly across the palate. Very easy to like, drinking now and over the next 3-5 years. Drinking range: 2017 - 2021 Rating: 89 L&S (Oct 2017)

This is another vineyard owned by the famous negociant Dourthe. La Garde typically represents outstanding value combined with reasonably good quality. The 2011 reveals a beguiling, flattering, precocious, up-front nose of plums, black cherries, kirsch, spice box, smoke and earth. Medium-bodied with velvety tannins as well as a gentle, but authoritative finish, this delicious sleeper of the vintage can be drunk over the next 10-12 years. Drinking range: 2014 - 2026 Rating: 88 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2016)

Blackish crimson. Freshly aromatic though it's pretty toasty too. Bright fresh black fruit. Tight though fully ripe tannins. Dryish finish, good length, in harmony if not particularly elegant. 2017-2024 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2012)

Very good concentration of ripe vineyard fruit. A classy impression. Drink 2014-2020. Rating: 16+ www.decanter.com (Apr 2012)

Château La Garde

Château La Garde is a medium-sized property with 47 hectares of vineyards in Pessac-Léognan, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. The Cabernet-dominated red wines are soft, well structured and packed with smooth, ripe fruit which makes them very attractive young, though they also possess good medium-term cellaring potential. Bought by the dynamic Bordeaux merchant Dourthe in the 1980s, this gem of an estate displays the true Graves minerality underneath an exuberant cassis-and-plums aroma. After huge initial investment in the vineyard and cellar immense care is now lavished upon the wine itself, and any re-assessment of the Pessac-Léognan classification would surely see this wine elevated to Cru Classé status
