2011 sees the unveiling of a new label for this old L&S favourite and its a cracker - a real improvement adding class to the look of this super value red from Stellenbosch. This is the flagship wine from May-Eliane de Lencquesain's (of Pichon-Lalande fame) immaculate South African outpost. It has an incredibly french feel which is jaw-dropping as you travel around this beautiful wine region - it really stands up for its elegance and well cut lines. But there is a lovely sophisticated flesh here too - dark, quite brooding plummy fruit has a firm satisfying feel, neatly spiced and framed with super fine structure - this is a bargain and a sophisticated, stylish wine, beyond the norm from this part of the world. This has alluring fresh espresso and smoldering juniper notes out front, followed by a rich, polished core of cassis and blackberry fruit. Features a serious spine of licorice root and a long tarry edge to the finish. Still has ample grip, but there's enough development here to begin drinking now. Glenelly Estate in the Idas Valley, Stellenbosch, is the home estate of May de Lencquesaing, previous owner of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Bordeaux. This is no retirement home, but an ambitious project to make serious wines in one of the Cape's most beautiful and best sited vineyard areas. May has recruited Luke O'Cuinneagain as winemaker, whose career includes Chateau Fieuzal, Angelus, Screaming Eagle and five years at Rustenberg before joining Glenelly. He is assisted by Adi Badenhost as consultant winemaker. There are three ranges of wine made at the estate. The 'Glass Collection'; premium varietals from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Chardonnay. The 'Grand Vin': the signature blend of the estate, using Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged 18 month in oak barrels. 'Lady May'; the flagship wine made of the best Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 24 months in new oak.
