VIRÉ-CLESSÉ

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin France, Burgundy
District Mâconnais
Village Viré-Clessé

Mushroom, creamed butter, quince and peach. Palate is rich with bright acid, ripe stone fruit, grip and balance, full flavoured with truffle and mushroom complexity. Absolutely beautiful balance between the full ripe fruit and the flowing, exciting acidity gives terrific length. L&S (Nov 2016)

Lively and rich with some hazelnuts and real depth. Very difficult to spit this! Pure pleasure. Rich baked-apple flavours. Drinking range: 2015 - 2020 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2017)

One of two Viré-Clessés shown at the tasting, which might look like overkill, but not when you've tasted them (see also Domaine Emilian Gillet). Both have a degree of opulence, but this six-year-old much more so. The nose is still floral, but also nutty and buttery and the palate is intense and powerful with a rich nougatine maturity kept fresh by laser-cut acidity. Rating: 91 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2017)

The 2011 Viré-Clessé Quintaine Cuvée E.J. Thevenet comes from vines on Oxfordian limestone soils and is the one to go for if you like to keep your Mâconnais dry and without residual sugar. It has an absolutely divine bouquet that can barely contain its heady perfume of orange blossom, peppermint and wild fennel, just a smear of dried honey on top and maybe even a hint of truffle. This is so nuanced but, at the same time, very complex. The palate is well balanced with lemongrass and orange rind, marmalade surfacing midway through the experience. The acidity is very well judged and there is a very harmonious, almost Condrieu-like finish that has swagger and verve. What are you waiting for?...Grab some bottles. Drinking range: 2018 - 2030 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2017)

Domaine de la Bon Gran

The Thévenets' original and flagship domaine, in which Jean Thévenet's son Gautier is now formly in charge, still making wines which are rich and ripe and are given no oak at all, and yet which still manage to be the most complex and satisfying wines of the Mâconnais.

The main cuvée we ship is his top 'dry' cuvée, called 'Sélection EJ Thévenet', which, after a nervous few years in which wines with over 2g of residual sugar were not admitted into the appellation, is now allowed to be called Viré-Clessé. Gautier also makes tiny quantities of the highly sought-after Cuvée Levroutée, a late-harvest just touched by botrytis with the constitution and depth of a Montrachet, and infinitesimal amounts of his Cuvée Botrytis, a fully sweet Sélection des Grains Nobles style. Organic production.
