CHÂTEAU DE FARGUES

2011 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé

The 2011 de Fargues has a delicate, perhaps slightly more malic bouquet than I was expecting. At present, it is a little more disjointed than its peers although I am sure it will become more cohesive throughout its maturation. The palate shows its true potential: medium-bodied with great tension on the spice-tinged entry. It is cohesive and mellifluous, although at present it does not have the depth or weight of a top flight de Fargues. However, it is precise and beautifully defined on the finish. Drink 2015-2030+. This wine has a convincing nose, full of dense and very reserved, concentrated, but tightly wound-up fruit. The palate is cool, defined, with great fruit concentration, pure and rich but also bright and fresh, with great energy behind it. This is acidic, grippy, balanced and exciting, and in the finish it shows a charged force, with a superb length. A very convincing wine in this vintage, typifying what is good about 2o11, a combination of promising gritty depth, great richness from a good residual and full, energetic acid grip. Rating: 18-19 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com

Mid to deep gold. Not terribly expressive at first and a touch oily on the nose. Ripe, ripe citrus verging on pineapple but freshness of pears and lemon marmalade too. Generous in the middle and a juicy fresh finish. Excellent concentration but an arrow of freshness too. 2018-2030 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com

Great density and unctuous texture that is classic Fargues. Generous, full-bodied, with layers of flavours ranging from dried apricots to sweet honeysuckle and marmalade. Very long, layered and beautifully made. Drink 2025-2047. Rating: 18.5 www.decanter.com

Château de Fargues

The imposing ruins of a fortress built in 1306 give Château de Fargues a certain mystery that suits the estate very well. Until 2004, Alexandre de Lur Saluces, owner of Château de Fargues, also managed the famous Château d'Yquem. This explains why the vitcultural and winemaking methods at Fargues are so similar to its prestigious "cousin".
