The 2011 La Dame de Montrose also benefitted from a strict selection as well as top-notch winemaking. Composed of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a spicy, ripe 2011 with lots of fat as well as abundant notes of blueberries and black currants in addition to a sexy, open-knit, mid-weight personality. Drink this seductive effort over the next decade. The harvest at Montrose was held between September 2-27, and only a tiny parcel in the southern sector of the vineyard was touched by the hail storm that swept through the Pauillac / St.-Estephe border on September 1. 2012 - 2022 Rating: 87-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2012)

The 2011 La Dame de Montrose is a blend of 72% Merlot and 27% Cabernet Franc. It displays fine minerality on the nose with good precision: blackberry, iodine and a touch of pencil lead. The palate is medium-bodied with a very tannic entry, gritty in the mouth with noticeable graphite and tertiary flavours. The back end is missing a little substance but the foursquare finish is satisfying. Fine. Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2012)

Merlot 72%, Cabernet Sauvignon 28%. In this glass this has a lovely colour. The aromatics are dark, with plentiful, spicy, Cabernet-tinged fruit, showing cassis sprinkled with spice giving it a savoury and slightly backward feel. Despite this it has a supple start on the palate, rich and savoury, with lots of depth to it. Rather accessible and rich, with an attractive show from the tannins in the finish. Château Montrose

St Estèphe Deuxième cru 1855 Wine production St Estèphe developed much later than further south in the Haut-Médoc - indeed, the vineyards of Château Montrose were not planted until 1815, when it was then part of the Calon-Ségur estate. Only 40 years later, not only had Montrose seperated from its parent, it had surpassed it, being one of only two St Estèphe estates to be awarded 2nd Growth status in the 1855 classification. Montrose sits nearer the river than Cos d'Estournel on classic Haut-Médoc gravel soil - the last outcrop as you head north. The 65ha of vines are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in wood (70% new). A second wine was introduced in 1983 - La Dame de Montrose - aged in wood for 12 months (20% new). Montrose is a noted performer in weaker vintages, possibly because of a generous micro-climate which allows slightly earlier picking than most of the Haut-Médoc. The wines age brilliantly.
