CHÂTEAU GRUAUD LAROSE

2012 2ème Cru Classé Saint Julien

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien
Classification 2ème Cru Classé

Very glossy and flattering on the attack - seems to have so much promise, some lovely, bright, red fruit and crunchy cassis. This then firms up a little in the middle and reveals its rather dense bones and deep dark, more austere, grippy core. L&S (May 2013)

Redcurrant and raspberry fruits, acidity a little fresher than in some St Juliens in what is a pretty gourmet vintage at this 10 year window. White pepper and rosemary spice, along with a lilting, sappy slate minerality. Don't expect concentration through the mid palate, but this is charming, finessed, and ready to begin drinking. 40% new oak. Rating: 92 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (Mar 2022)

The Grand Vin is a blend of 66.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 6.5% Petit Verdot, delivering 13.46% alcohol and an IPT of 73. Harvest commenced on 2nd October with the Merlot, the Cabernet picked between 11th and 18th October. The bouquet is fresh with expressive Merlot – not a complex aromatic profile but expanding nicely in the glass with subtle floral notes. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a gentle but insistent grip. The acidity is well judged and it builds very nicely in the mouth to a finish that is more sophisticated than the nose presently suggest. This will be a fine, medium-term Gruaud Larose. Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2013)

I detected a touch of wet vegetative material in this muscular, solidly constructed, dark ruby/purple-colored 2012. There is abundant austerity as well as a certain hollowness in the mid-palate, and the wine seems directionless at present. The firm tannins, medium body and deficiency in the mid-palate raise questions about where this cuvee is heading. It’s possible that the mid-palate will fill out with additional cellaring, leading the wine to perform better than this note suggests. Rating: 85-87 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2013)

Château Gruaud Larose

St Julien Deuxième cru 1855 The story of Château Gruaud Larose starts with Joseph Stanislas Gruaud who developed the estate in the early 18th Century. Two of his descendents ended up with different halves of the Gruaud estate until, in 1778, Chevalier de Gruaud died and left his portion to his son-in-law Joseph Sébastien de la Rose who immediately appended his name to the estate. Gruaud-Larose was split further in 1867, with Château Gruaud-Larose-Sarget and Château Gruaud-Larose-Faure being seperate until 1935 when the Cordier family, who'd bought the Sarget half in 1919, bought Gruaud-Larose-Faure and put the old estate back together again. Ownership by the Cordiers, and the association with other similarly labelled wines in the portfolio - Talbot, Meyney - kept Château Gruaud Larose as a consistent favourite among Bordeaux lovers. Gruaud-Larose is now owned by the Taillan Group. There are 82ha of vineyard, just to the south west of Beychevelle - 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. A second wine was introduced in 1979 - Sarget de Gruaud-Larose. Gruaud-Larose is among the fuller-bodied styles of St Julien, producing consistently good wines and, whilst the crown of "best estate in St Julien" sits with Leoville Las Cases, the wines of Gruaud-Larose are always worth following.
