CHÂTEAU HAUT BAILLY

2012 Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan Château Haut Bailly

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Pessac-Léognan
Classification Cru Classé
ABV 14%

Deep colour, brutally young to taste but nevertheless quite exciting. Very dense A bit of a long-term classic - quite hard work for now. There is aroma and definition, but the finish is very dry. A second sample had a bit more lift, but the showing on this one day was of a good not great Haut Bailly. Rating: 92 L&S (May 2013)

The 2012 Haut-Bailly has a well-defined bouquet, blackberry and tobacco at first, red fruit emerging with time. The oak is neatly folded in here. The palate is ripe and fleshy on the entry, powerful and quite dense, although it lacks the complexity of the de Fieuzal towards the finish and just misses a bit of vigour, unlike the bottle that formed part of my vertical at the property. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2022)

Sweet blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, this displays grip, poise and total control from the winemaking team. Mouthwatering, with deft and well-hewn tannins, reallly steps up among the line up, showing signature grip and poise. The limitations of the 2012 vintage comes through in terms of a soft landing, and it is ready to begin drinking, but this is skilful, mouthwatering and offers plenty to enjoy. Harvest September 27th and October 15th Rating: 92 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (Mar 2022)

Château Haut Bailly

The now very reliable Pessac-Léognan estate of Haut Bailly was revived after its purchase by Belgian Daniel Sanders. He'd married into the Bordeaux wine trade in 1919, and formed a determination to buy Haut Bailly after tasting their awesome 1945. There was much work to do upon buying the estate, some of the vines were still ungrafted for instance, and the renovation was still not complete by the time Daniel's son took over in 1979. Véronique Sanders represents the latest generation to run the estate, albeit under the benign ownership of American Robert Wilmers who bought Haut Bailly in 1998 bringing more much needed investment, the fruits of which can be seen in the high quality of today's wines. The vineyards are planted to a fairly typical "Left Bank" mix of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc.
