2012 1er Cru Les Naugues Domaine François Raquillet
Even more to this than the Veleys, a fresher precision to the fruit, bright and black and shiny. Quite present tannins - fine but definitely structural. Rating: 90-92 L&S (Jan 2014)
*Case Price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
(from vines planted in 1972 and raised in ~60% new oak). Here too there is a top note of menthol present on the otherwise very fresh and ripe aromas of black cherry liqueur scents that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. This is a very robust and powerful big-bodied wine that possesses excellent richness that helps to buffer the obvious muscularity on the very firm and structured finale. This should not only age well but require it so while this is a wonderful effort it will best please those who have the patience to wait for at least 4 to 5 years before cracking a bottle. 2022+ Rating: 92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2015)
Domaine François Raquillet
François took over the running of this estate from his father, Jean, in 1984, and records show that the same family have made wine in Mercurey since the 1600s. With eleven hectares under vine, François has substantially reduced yields, introduced higher quality oak barrels and significantly increased the quality of wines made at this domaine. Francois explains he tries to avoid over-extraction at all costs - his one aim is to deliver the beautifully pure fruit profile he gets out of the old vines - this he does with great success. It is a wonderfully transparent style- combined with good mid-palate weight.
