Very old vines. 100% whole bunch, and 100% new oak barrels. The treatment sounds heavy handed, but for this wine it works. Black and massive, sweet and above all intense and chewy. L&S (Dec 2013)

(100% vendange entier; just 24 hectoliters per hectare produced): Bright, full red. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet and licorice. Very dark and concentrated, with good shape to its black fruit and spice flavors. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and a saline nuance. Lignier notes that this is normally a massive wine and that he used stems "to refine it." Rating: 89-91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2014)

(100% whole cluster). This offers even better aromatic complexity with yet more floral influence to the spicy, earthy and slightly smoky dark currant and plum suffused nose. There is a round and very suave mouth feel to the ripe and robust medium-bodied flavors that possess equally good depth on the solidly persistent finish. This should age well over the medium term yet be approachable young. 2020+ Rating: 90-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2014)

Just 2 of the usual 7 barrels. “There is a fault here and there is more limestone coming up to the surface.” 100% whole bunch. Just under Charmes but deeper soil. 100% whole bunch. Sweetness to the attack. This has the spice of whole bunch. Very compact, dense, dark and spicy. Liquorish notes. The density gives the freshness; grip and power on the finish. To me this is more like his style of the past and less airy and pure, bit earthier and more tannin. This may be the 100% whole bunch? From 2017. Rating: 17.35 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Dec 2013)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
