MOREY SAINT DENIS
2012 1er Cru Charmes Domaine Lignier-Michelot
|Sub-district||Côte de Nuits|
|Village||Morey Saint Denis|
The most northerly premier cru of Morey, just before Mazoyères Chambertin. Pretty seriously massive. Sweetly weighty with very ripe black fruit, and an opulence which releases more aromas, all braced by a touch of whole bunch crispness. Finesse and charm and length more than muscles. L&S (Dec 2013)

The winemaking at this domaine hit new heights in 2012, with high quality right across the board. The village level wines are very good, but it’s worth paying extra to buy this Premier Cru. This is a Morey that has Chambolle-like finesse and poise. Aromatic, subtle and finely balanced, this surfs on a wave of succulent berry fruit. 2017-28 Rating: 95 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com(Jan 2014)
Fragrant, wood spice and cinnamon with red cherry fruit. Soft, supple structure. Good perfume on the finish. 2015-2025 Rating: 16.5+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com(Jan 2014)
Bright medium red. Complex aromas of cherry, raspberry, strawberry and musky underbrush. Silky-sweet and pliant, with a saline element to the red fruit flavors. A tad diffuse but offers an attractive combination of red fruits, soil tones and minerality. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and very good length. A nice expression of alluvial soil. Rating: 89-91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar(Jan 2014)
(from 50+ year old vines, 50% whole cluster). This is really very pretty with its perfumed aromas of violet, plum and black cherries. There is a supple and very rich palate impression to the sappy and mouth coating middle weight flavors that are shaped by relatively fine tannins on the long and punchy finish. 2019+ Rating: 89-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com(Jan 2014)
Gevrey side: Marne and then limestone underneath. The clay is deeper than for the soils in the next two – at the end of the combe and so there are a lot of fossils that have been swept down. It is quite alluvial. The top soil has come down and shares that of Combottes; same soil but not the same exposition, alluvial and clay, 50cm the limestone beneath. This has a lifted, pure and upright aroma. Delicate, airy, light. Lovely purity and intensity. Crispness to the edge and spice. This is delightful. This is a very different style. This really illustrates how virgile has moved towards more refinement. From 2016/17. Rating: 17.65 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing(Dec 2013)
A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.
In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.
The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
