SLEEPY HOLLOW

2012 Chardonnay Talbott Vineyards

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin USA, California
ABV 14.5%

This wine was made almost entirely using Old Wente clone fruit (planted in 1972) from our prized South Block. It also includes a small amount of grapes from 20-year-old Dijon clone vines. Sleepy Hollow is situated on 585 acres of benchland in the Santa Lucia Highlands, 13 miles south of Monterey. The well-drained vineyard features sparse soils comprised of sand, gravel, and granite. These soils reduce yields and create rich, concentrated flavors in the grapes. The vineyard receives morning sunlight from its east-northeast exposure, and lives much of the time in the cool fog and wind from the Pacific Ocean. With a long, cool growing season, the grapes develop the character, intensity and depth of flavor for which the vineyard has become famous. 100% barrel fermented. All French oak (30% new). Aged sur lie approximately 10 months. It has aromas of pear and green apple, complemented by French oak and toasty brioche notes. On the palate, it is lush and elegant, with a creamy mouthfeel and flavors of white peach and pear. Round oak tannins are perfectly balanced by acidity, and there is a long finish that builds over time. The Sleepy Hollow Vineyard defines this wine, with power, richness, and bright (cool-climate, zone 1) acidity. 14.5% L&S (May 2014)

(30% new French oak): Pale gold. Poached pear, Meyer lemon, buttered toast and white flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. Smooth, open-knit orchard fruit and orange flavors stain the palate, picking up a smoky nuance with aeration. Shows excellent clarity and punch on the mineral-tinged finish, which leaves suave floral and citrus fruit notes behind. Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2014)

Talbott Vineyards

After being inspired by a boyhood trip to Burgundy, Robb Talbott built his wine estate almost single-handedly planting vines in the rocky barren Diamond T vineyard in 1982. In 1994 he acquired Sleepy Hollow in the Santa Lucia Highlands, a phylloxera-free vineyard planted in 1972. Together with winemaker Dan Karlsen, Robb is making some of Monterey's (even California's) finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.
