2013 Vigna Fontelontano Riserva Collemattoni

Grapes Sangiovese
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
Sub-district Brunello di Montalcino
Classification Riserva
ABV 13.5%

Moderately saturated red. Deep rich aromas of redcurrant, smoky dark chocolate-covered plum, vanilla, mocha and grilled meat. Silky-sweet on entry, then fine-grained and creamy in the middle. Boasts outstanding density and an exhilarating acid/tannin/fruit balance. Closes long and suave with a strong note of vanilla and other oaky spices. You can tell this was aged in smaller oak barrels (500 liter tonneaux). Drinking range: 2021 - 2031 Rating: 94 L&S (Mar 2019)

Minty rich cherry fruit nose with minerally, chalky notes. Lots of juice and concentration and with well-managed, integrated oak. Bags of tannins which need time to evolve more, although this wine is already seven years old. Still going strong and, although this is a powerful wine with more than 15%, it is well balanced. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 17+ Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Apr 2020)

Mid to light ruby with bricky rim. This is wonderfully on the cusp between fruity and starting to show a more savoury, mature character. Some woodland, some spice, and a hint of umami. Chewy but really smooth. Still very youthful but hinting at much greater complexity to come. Lots of spice on the finish and even a touch of something floral. Very hard to describe in this transition phase. Drinking range: 2019 - 2030 Rating: 17.5+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2019)

Collemattoni

This is a small, 13-hectare estate, spread across the Southwest and Southeast of Montalcino. The winery (and some of these 13 hectares), sits in San Angelo in Colle on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Winemaker Marcello Bucci is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
