CHÂTEAU COUTET

2013 1er Cru Classé Barsac

Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Barsac
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 13.5%

The 2013 Coutet has an attractive nose with dried honey, frangipane, rosewater and orange pith scents, blossoming nicely in the glass like a bashful child suddenly discovering their singing voice. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, lightly spiced marmalade and tangy apricot laced with white pepper on the finish. Impressive in terms of length, this Barsac is drinking well right now, but knowing Coutet's propensity to mature, will give another couple of decade's drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2023 - 2045 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2023)

Unctuous and ripe, with mouthfilling almond cream, ginger, heather honey and apricot flavors, this will need time to unwind fully, but when it does, expect more pineapple, maple and singed orange notes, as this has some depth and power in reserve, with more than enough cut for balance. A beauty in the making. Drinking range: 2018 - 2038 Rating: 96 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Jan 2016)

Pale gold. Lively, pure fruit cocktail aromas complicated by honey and spice. Dense, pure and very intense, with electric acidity giving terrific lift to the botrytis-rich flavors of banana flambé, ginger and ripe mango. The finish is remarkably clean and long, with chewy tannins. A very impressive Coutet, though it strikes me, in perfect 2013 style, as much less massive and rich than usual. Rating: 91-94 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website

Lush rich ripe the nose has depth and sweetness and the palate is sumptuous and fleshy. There is a lovely mix of flavours candied peel, ripe apricot and Christmas cake yet the underlying freshness helps to balances. The finish has depth sweetness and power. 2020-35. Château Coutet

Barsac Premier Cru 1855 A square tower indicates the origins of Château Coutet as a 13th Century fortification. Indeed the château is a mixture of various styles added at various times in its long history. At the turn of the 19th Century, Château Coutet came into the possession of the Lur-Saluces family, owners of Château d'Yquem, and they owned it until 1923. Since 1977, Coutet has been owned by the Baly family, represented today by brothers Dominique and Philippe. Château Coutet is one of the two Premier Cru properties in Barsac (the other being Château Climens). There are 38.5ha of vineyard, given over 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Wines are fermented in wood (50% new) and aged for up to 18 months.
