CHÂTEAU LES CARMES HAUT BRION

2013 Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Pessac-Léognan
Classification Cru Classé
ABV 13.5%

Very creamy feel after indistinct nose. While not as oaky as Pape Clement, the flavours in the cream are similar until the finish which is rather more densely structured. Seems to have the fruit for now. It's in the style of a round fleshy blunt gobful rather than finesse and length. 2017-2024 Rating: 87 L&S (Apr 2014)

Rich blackberry on the nose of this suave, concentrated wine. Shows ripe tannins and surprising density and weight. Although the acidity is modest, it's balanced and quite long. Drinking range: 2016 - 2024 Rating: 91 Stephen Brook, Decanter.com (Oct 2016)

A blend of 59% Cabernet Franc, 22% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, there will be approximately 15,600 bottles of the 2013 (one-third of the 2012 production). The results of Pichet’s investments and the draconian selection process are stunning as this is one of the stars of the vintage. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by notes of sweet black cherries, charcoal, graphite, white chocolate, camphor and asphalt. With a medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, and an overall completeness that is rare in this vintage, this is a major sleeper of the vintage. A brilliant success, the 2013 is one of the finest wines produced at this tiny, jewel of an estate sandwiched between Pape Clement, Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion. It has frequently been an erratic performer, particularly in view of the terroir, but since its purchase by Patrice Pichet, numerous investments have been made. 2015-2023. Rating: 91-93 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

Opaque purple-ruby: one of the darkest Left Bank wines of the year. Blackberry, mint jelly and fresh herbs on the nose, lifted by a pungent floral note. Then very tannic on entry, with the black fruit and herbal flavors wrapped tightly in an oaky shroud. This brooding wine hints at greater concentration of underlying blackberry and spicy strawberry fruit than the average 2013 red. Les Carmes always has one of the highest percentages of cabernet franc among Pessac-Leognan wines and, though usually awkward in the early going, it tends to blossom with age. Rating: 87-90 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (May 2014)
