Very classical Lynch with masses of black fruit, fresh and pure. It has not got the movement of a top vintage but the Lynch Bages generosity is here even if distinctiveness is limited. Supple and cool in its concentrated volume. The finish picks up the freshness and gives an impression of much more to come. It's just a bit dry to score higher now, but I'd expect this to train on, probably above the upper end of where it feels now. Rating: 89-91 L&S (Apr 2014)

Fruity, light-bodied, pleasant, lush and charming, Lynch Bages’ winemaking team was hesitant to push for any kind of extraction or density because of the pressures from rot. However, they have avoided any harshness in the tannins and vegetal characteristics. The result is an uncharacteristically superficial Lynch Bages that is a modern day version of their 1973. Ruby-red. Complex aromas of blackberry, espresso, flint and violet. Expansive and sweet on the palate, with almost soft, perfumed flavors of dark berries, sweet spices and white pepper. The fruit on the nose feels sweet the palate has depth and richness with lots of cassis and black cherry. One of the successes of the campaign, partly because it was reasonably priced, this is a comparatively backward wine that will need time in barrel and bottle to soften. (72 Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 Merlot, 6 Cabernet Franc, 2 Petit Verdot) 75% new oak. A typically lovely, hedonistic, black cherry nose kicks off proceedings well. The palate tries to be rich and it just about succeeds. Initially structured and imposing it, however, runs out of steam on the back palate and ends a little épuisée (exhausted). This is an impressive story with a gripping first half and a predictable ending. Disappointingly short from this Château, but nice while it lasts. Cropped at 31hl/ha, a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, Jean-Charles Cazes told me that it was one of the shortest harvests because of the low yields between 1 and 12 October. The bouquet is has a pure floral bouquet that is quite Margaux-like in style. It is well defined with touches of crème de cassis and blueberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded, quite succulent entry. The acidity is nicely judge and there is a cohesive finish that feels long and tender in the mouth. The 2013 Lynch-Bages is unusual but also quite pretty. In this vintage the flavors are quite dark, with distinct dark red/purplish overtones. Dried flowers, cloves and sage are some of the notes that develop with time in the glass. The 2013 finishes with lovely length and precision. The blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Rating: 90-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2014)
Château Lynch Bages
Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 Thomas Lynch emigrated to Bordeaux from Galway in Ireland in 1691. He had two children and it was his son Thomas who associated the family name with Bordeaux by inheriting Lynch-Bages through his wife, and buying Lynch-Moussas and Dauzac in Margaux. Jean-Charles Cazes, who had recently bought Château Les Ormes de Pez in St Estèphe, took the tenancy of Lynch-Bages in 1934, and bought the property outright five years later. It has been the ownership of the Cazes family, who still own the estate, which turned Château Lynch Bages into the leading estate it is today, far exceeding the seemingly lowly 5th growth status bestowed upon it in 1855. There are 90ha of vines in the small village of Bages, just south of Pauillac. Red grapes are planted to 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Wines are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel before ageing in wood (60% new) for 15 months. There has been a second wine produced at Lynch-Bages since 1978 that was originally called Château Haut Bages Averous, but has recently been renamed Echo de Lynch Bages. A small amount of Château Lynch Bages Blanc is made from 40% each of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and 20% Muscadelle.
