MERCUREY

2013 Vieilles Vignes Domaine François Raquillet

Grapes Pinot Noir
Colour Red
Origin France, Burgundy
District Côte Chalonnaise
Village Mercurey
ABV 13%

Lovely but less pronounced nose with fragrant and concentrated black raspberry, cherry and wood spice. Good grip on the palate, bright acid, rich tannins, spice, black cherry, lovely and long. These vines are over 60 years old and you can see how the 20% new oak barrels that Francois uses add rather than dominates the intense deep core of rich fruit. L&S (Dec 2014)

Mid crimson. Sweet, ripe chestnut nose with some development already. Round, ripe bitter cherry fruit. Light grainy tannins give a real grip on the end. Marked but not aggressive acidity. Drinking range: 2015 - 2019 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2015)

A pungent nose of wood and reduction would make 30 minutes of aeration advisable if you’re tempted to try a bottle upon release. The old vines are in evidence as the medium-bodied flavors definitely possess better mid-palate concentration as well as solid richness on the textured, complex and impressively persistent finish. This is an excellent villages and also worth considering. 2020+ Rating: 89 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Oct 2015)

Rating: 91 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Jan 2015)

Domaine François Raquillet

François took over the running of this estate from his father, Jean, in 1990, with his wife Emmanuelle. Records show that the same family have made wine in Mercurey since the 1600s, and Francois is the eleventh generation.

With eleven hectares under vine, François has substantially reduced yields, introduced higher quality oak barrels (up to 50% new wood for the Premiers Crus) and significantly increased the quality of wines made at this domaine. François explains he tries to avoid over-extraction at all costs - his one aim is to deliver the beautifully pure fruit profile he gets out of the old vines - this he does with great success. It is a wonderfully transparent style - combined with good mid-palate weight.
