2013 Los Companeros Pikes Polish Hill River Estate
|Origin||Australia, South Australia|
Los Companeros, or "The Companions," is all about the relationship between the two varietals of which it composed. Los Companeros is a blend of 90% Shiraz with 10% Tempranillo sourced from the seventy-five hectares of vineyard planted across the Polish Hill River Estate. Attractive blueberry fruit with some chocolate mint undertones as well as a little spice and earthiness that add some complexity. The oak is very much in the background and plays no big role. Rich, ripe and approachable, the sweetish blueberry and chocolate flavours are balanced nicely by fine tannins and good acid. Winemaker's notes (Dec 2015)
*Case Price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
Pikes Polish Hill River Estate
Owned by the Pike brothers, one of whom (Andrew) was for many years the senior viticulturist with Southcorp, the other (Neil) a former winemaker at Mitchells. Pikes now has its own winery, with Neil Pike presiding.
Generously constructed and flavoured wines are the order of the day, but wines which also have a restraint and a drinkability far ahead of some of the 'maximum one glass' reds that seem to dominate Australian shows and exports.
