The premium bottling at Squerryes. Aged for 90 months on the lees, and approaching its tenth birthday, this is a rare and wonderful treat. This is an amazingly complex wine, full of purity and verve. As bright and fresh as a wine half its age, this is glorious today and will be an absolute treat in 5-10 years time (if you can wait!). L&S (Jul 2022)

40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Meunier Dosage 5g/L 87 months on lees (just over 7 years). Disgorged August 2021. In the vineyard: late bud burst with late snow and cool weather, and a particularly cold April. Flowering was reasonable but the season stayed behind, staying relatively cool. Good inflorescence which led to good fruit ripeness but relatively low sugar and high acid. Harvest completed by end of October. Tasting note: complex nose of cream and butter with a surprisingly youthful green apple freshness and hints of citrus. The multi-layered palate shows rich peaches and cream with toasted nuts, touches of brioche and a citrus pith cutting through to an exceptionally long finish. Elegant and fine, this wine should have a long life ahead of it.
Squerryes
‘Licet Esse Beatis’: it is permitted to be joyful. This motto, that adorns the doorway to the Squerryes Estate, could not be more fitting of the wines.
From this corner of the North Downs, often overlooked in winemaking with the more famous South Downs stealing the limelight, the Warde family first noticed the potential in the estate and planted vines here in 2006. A geological survey had confirmed that the chalk escarpment had qualities similar to the esteemed 'Côte des Blancs' region of Champagne.
The only use their own grapes, and the base wines that are blended into the cuvée are aged for the lees for extended periods, creating incredible complexity in the wines.
The wines are extremely smart and beautifully complex, offering masses of autolytic layering with a gorgeous line of fresh acidity.
