CAHORS

2014 Cuvée Cèdre Héritage Pascal Verhaeghe

Grapes Merlot, Malbec
Colour Red
Origin France, South West
Sub-district Cahors
ABV 13%

95% Malbec, 5% Merlot. 2014 was a tricky season in the South West, but thankfully the team at Chateau du Cedre were saved by a hot, late burst of summer which dried everything out and got the grapes up to good ripeness. This is a deep, intense yet bright style of Malbec. Really fresh and so definitively French. This Cuvée represents a rare bargain from the maestros - brothers Pascal et Jean-Marc Verhaeghe. Lovely dark black fruits, some violet notes and lots of well balanced weight. Delicious. L&S (Aug 2016)

Perhaps the most famous of the southwestern appellations, Cahors lies to the north of Gaillac in the Lot Valley around the beautiful medieval city from which it takes its name. In its 14th-century heyday, its famously dark, strong “black” wines were more highly prized than those of Bordeaux. Its recent revival owes rather a lot to the Argentinians, who’ve made a speciality of Cahors’ red grape variety, malbec, a style that has been one of the UK wine trade’s biggest hits of recent years. Today’s Cahors malbecs have some of the power of both Argentina and those antique black wines. But they are a little more sinewy, with the best, such as Château de Cèdre’s, offering a floral lilt to leaven the meaty, meat-friendly richness.David Williams, The Observer (Jan 2017)

Pascal Verhaeghe

Chateau du Cèdre, widely regarded as one of Cahors' leading estate, is the domaine of brothers Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe. Pascal, a mathematician at heart who came to winemaking later in life, is the driving force here. Although the son of a winemaker - his father founded the domaine in 1956 - he took little interest in the daily running of the vineyards and making wines until his experiences in Burgundy, making wines with Jean-Marie Guffens, swayed his opinion.
