CARO

2014 Bodegas Caro

Grapes Cab Sauv, Malbec
Colour Red
Origin Argentina
ABV 14%

Bright ruby-red. Musky aromas of blackberry, cassis, tobacco leaf, licorice, mocha and graphite minerality, with complementary, high-quality oak. Wonderfully suave, sweet, pliant wine with huge early sex appeal and terrific depth and refinement to its dark berry and spice flavors. The tannins are present but smooth and harmonious and the wine finishes with terrific breadth, classic dryness and superb smoky persistence. Is this even denser than the '15? Today, it displays more energy and definition, perhaps owing to the cooler 2014 vintage. After 48 in the recorked bottle, this wine hadn't lost a step. Aromas of spices, smoke, berries and bark follow through to a medium body, medium round tannins and a wonderful finish. Love the finish of this, which gives a hint of walnuts, dark tea and ripe fruit. Very sophisticated. A blend of malbec and cabernet sauvignon. Better in 2019. Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Sept 2017)

Bodegas Caro combines the power and richness of its two owner Estates, Domaines Barons de Rothschild, the owners of Lafite Rothschild and with Nicolas Catena Zapata, the king of Malbec. Bodegas Caro spends 18 months in barrel, which is the kind of treatment Lafite Rothschild receives. It is a wine that truly embodies a fusion of Bordeaux and Mendoza to extreme effect. In 2014, the blend is 66% Malbec and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon.Winemaker's notes (Jul 2017)

In their quest for elegant wines, the 2014 Caro was aged in "only" 60% new French oak, down from 100% in the "good old times," and they have seen that this percentage is the one that works for what they are looking for. In 2014 I saw cleaner, more focused aromas, and the animal notes of the past are absent. The blend this year was two thirds Malbec from Las Compuertas and one third Cabernet Sauvignon from Altamira. This is quite classical, with aromas of lead pencil and cigar box, a core of blackberries and a very polished, elegant palate with ultra-fine tannins. It's an approachable, elegant and easy to drink red blend. It seems like the Caro team is finding their way... 30,000 bottles produced. Drinking range: 2016 - 2021 Rating: 93 Luis Gutierrez, www.robertparker.com (Dec 2016)

Bodegas Caro

The name CARO is simply explained - it is the first two letters from the surnames of the two prestigious wine families who have come together to create this brilliant project CAtena & ROthschild.
The idea of forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family was born in 1999. Initial enthusiasm quickly became a concrete plan to produce a single wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and the two signature grapes of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Catena family has produced wine for four generations. Consequently, it was able to draw on its vast knowledge of the high altitude terroirs of the Mendoza region as well as its passion for Malbec to find the best vineyards. DBR (Lafite) contributed its centuries-old skills in growing, vinifying and ageing great Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as its know-how in blending different grape varieties to produce one wine that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Exchanges and selection work began in 1999 to produce CARO’s first vintage in 2000. The success of the early vintages resulted in the creation of another wine in 2003: AMANCAYA which, like its older brother, is based on a harmonious balance between Argentinian identity and Bordeaux style. Bodegas CARO then decided to celebrate the grape variety for which Argentina’s vineyards are famous by selecting a pure Malbec, ARUMA, starting with the 2010 vintage. This is South American wine in a revolutionary style that is altogether more appetising than the norm.
