CHÂTEAU L'ÉVANGILE

2014 Pomerol Château L'Évangile

Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol

One negociant, with years of experience told us that this is the best L'Évangile he can remember - and it certaily is very impressive. On the nose the floral notes of violets and leafy blackberries is very enticing and follows to a slightly more intense slightly more rich centre. Dark plum flesh and a spiced morello cherries - this is given a lovely feel by superbly fine-grained dusty tannins - good fruit led drive. Rating: 93 L&S (Mar 2015)

The 2014 L'Évangile is laced with black cherry, torrefaction, spice, leather, licorice and heavy French oak. It will be interesting to see if the fruit emerges here. Today, the oak is quite dominant in both the wine's flavor profile and its texture. I would like to think a little more nuance is possible given L'Évangile's neighborhood. Drinking range: 2019 - 2034 Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2017)

Slightly trimmer and less opulent in style with all the estate's Cabernet Franc in the blend. Gently aromatic with attractive fruit. Long and silky on the palate. Touch of alcohol on the finish but balanced b the freshness of the tannins. (Highly Recommended Pomerol, Decanter.) Drinking range: 2021 - 2034 Rating: 91 James Lawther MW, decanter.com (May 2015)

The Château L’Evangile 2014 is a blend of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc, the latter from re-planted vines that have come into the grand vin. It has a very refined bouquet, the Cabernet Franc lending a slight savory character. The palate is beautifully structured with a fine line of acidity. The black fruit is suffused with a hint of sweet coconut coming through on the finish from the oak. That will be subsumed with time. This is quite a powerful L’Evangile with fine tannins and an insistent grip. This is an impressive L'Evangile and it may warrant a higher score after bottling. Drinking range: 2022 - 2045 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2015)

Château L'Évangile

Sandwiched between Château Petrus to the north and Château Cheval Blanc to the south are the vineyards of Château l’Evangile. In the latter part of the 19th Century l’Evangile’s wines were rated as second only to Petrus, reflecting the glory of its illustrious neighbours.

Château l’Evangile’s origins lay in an estate called Domaine de Mautretat that was broken up in the early years of the 18th Century with a Mme Conseillan taking one part (that went on to be next-door neighbours Château Conseillante) with a reverend gentleman called M. Léglise purchasing the other, to be called Château Fazilleau until renamed l’Evangile – the Gospel – in the late 19th Century, presumably in keeping with having St Peter (Petrus) next door.

Today Château l’Evangile is owned by Domaines Baron de Rothschild (Lafite), they having purchased the estate in 1990 from the Ducasse family one of whose forebears, Paul Chaperon, had built the château in 1874. DBR have injected a whole new level of investment and improvement to once again raise l’Evangile to the very top echelon of Pomerol. The 22ha of vineyard and planted for the most part on an usual gravel band that runs through the more usual clay soil. They are planted with 79% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are aged in barrel for between 12 and 24 months, although in more recent vintages they, like many producers in France, have also used larger oak foudres, amphorae and concrete vats alongside the traditional barriques bordelaises of 225 l.
