CHÂTEAU LA CROIX SAINT GEORGES

2014 Pomerol

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol
ABV 14%

Gentle fresh nose, nicely floral and touch of perky red fruit. Palate is more intense, riper - more fruit-centric. Quite rich and gently plump feel - but this ends up bright and lifted on the finish. Almost racy, but with enough good, soft stuffing - this is an intriguing Pomerol elegant, aromatic and poised. Rating: 90 L&S (Apr 2015)

The 2014 La Croix Saint Georges is a very pretty, lifted Pomerol built on expressive aromatics and an understated, feminine personality. Sweet floral notes meld into red currant, blood orange, mint and white pepper in a bright, aromatically lifted Pomerol. Rating: 87-89 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2015)

The Château La Croix St. Georges 2014 has an uncomplicated, fresh bouquet with brambly red berry fruit with a touch of wilted rose petal, though it does not deliver the concentration of recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, well-judged acidity and a harmonious, elegant finish. Winemaker Jean-Philippe Janoueix usually goes from a more bullish style of Pomerol. This is more refined and in a way, classier. It will also be one of Pomerol's more approachable wines but one that still deserves respect. Drinking range: 2018 - 2030 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2015)

Mid ruby. Hint of mint before a very sweet palate. Also a hint of sweet oak – just a little more than I’d like. Decent medium Pomerol. But not trying desperately hard. Drinking range: 2019 - 2028 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2015)

Château La Croix Saint Georges

A few rows from the iconic Le Pin sits Château La Croix Saint George, that once belonged to the Hospitaliers of Saint Jean de Jerusalem, hence the religious name. It was purchased by the Janoueix family in 1932. Until recent years there were no wine making facilities at La Croix Saint George, with the grapes being carted off to nearby Château La Croix for vinification. When Philippe Janoueix took the reins in 1999, he built proper facilities at La Croix Saint George and the wine is now made and matured on site. The 4.2ha of vineyard are 95% Merlot with the balance being Cabernet Franc, with an average age of 38 years. The wines are aged in 100% new wood, with the barrels being an unusual elongated cigar-shape to allow for more lees contact.
