CHÂTEAU LA VIOLETTE

2014 Pomerol

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol
ABV 14%

The 2014 La Violette put in quite a brilliant performance. It has a clean and precise bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, bay leaf and clove-like aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, very well balanced and price with a harmonious, poised and sustained finish. This is a very classy Pomerol although it will require several years in bottle. This is one to watch. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2021 - 2050 Rating: 96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2018)

Only 2900 bottles of this 100% Merlot entirely fermented in barrel. Fragrant and floral. Intense, layered fruit and really fine texture and tannins. Long and subtle finish. (Highly Recommended Pomerol, Decanter.) Drinking range: 2020 - 2032 Rating: 92 James Lawther MW, decanter.com (May 2015)

The Château La Violette 2014 usually has a rambunctious, over-the-top nose that coats your senses in glycerin...but not this year. This year the La Violette is showing more restraint and composure, though the lavish black cherries and cassis notes remain in place. They are just put on a leash. The palate is full-bodied with a citrus-fresh opening, very fine tannin, great depth and a very elegant finish. You know, tasted blind I would never guess this to be La Violette. The bottom line is that it is very suave and stylish, the kind of Pomerol attired in a velvet crush tuxedo. Drinking range: 2018 - 2035 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2015)

The fruit on the nose is fresh the start of the palate fragrant with a bramble bilberry mix. Richer in the middle with some sweet ripe black plum the fleshy suppleness gives way to brighter fresher fruit at the back. Drinking range: 2022 - 2033 Rating: 87-90 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Apr 2015)

Château La Violette

The wines of Château la Violette should be good but, in truth, have only achieved their potential since the vineyard was bought by Catherine Pere-Verge in 2006. The 1.6 ha vineyard sits atop the Pomerol plateau, next to Château Trotanoy and very near Le Pin. Another plot of vines near to Feytit Clinet that came with the purchase is now used for Château Montveil in order to preserve the absolute quality of Château la Violette. With no chai at la Violette, the wines are made at Château le Gay. It is a tiny vineyard – 1.8ha – and the yields are very small. The vines, many of which are over 60 years old, are 100% Merlot and are planted on clay and gravel soil.
