A sophisticated nose full of rich plum and dark berry fruit mingling with tobacco leaf and sweet spice. This could easily be from a much grander appelation than Côtes de Francs. The wine has a lovely freshness and weight in the mouth - a prime example of the 'buvabilité' that is one of the hallmarks of the 2014 vintage. The finish is warming and immensely satisfying. There's really no excuse not to have another sip. Yet another superb wine from Nicolas Thienpont and his team. Drinking range: 2018 - 2023 L&S (Sep 2018)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles (or 9l equivalent) of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.

A good value Bordeaux Merlot from this tiny, eastern Right Bank appellation (northern neighbour of Côtes de Castillon, if you're struggling to find it). Round and approachable with spicy, cedary black fruit, an attractive leafy freshness, light dry tannins and a clean-lined finish. Lauriol is essentially a second wine, made from the younger vines of the highly-rated Château Puygueraud. Rating: 88 The Wine Gang - (Oct 2017)
