This well-proportioned property between Pontet Canet and Mouton Rothschild, is run by the Pichon Baron team - and making some brilliant wines. The 2014 has all the hallmarks of classic Pauillac. Suave, with a sophisticated patina of polished dark berry and plum fruit. Great lines, pert yet easy and a wonderful cigar-box and baking spice lift that adds a touch of grand exoticism - all this at a bargain price for wines from this particular 'coin' de Bordeaux. L&S (Sept 2021)

The 2014 Pibran has a clean, well-defined bouquet of blackberry, wild hedgerow and light pencil shaving scents that become more prominent as the wine aerates. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. A nimble 2014 with a superb line of acidity and real tension toward the lightly spiced finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle and then drink away. Tasted at the Pibran vertical at Château Pichon-Baron. Drinking range: 2018 - 2032 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)
The 2014 Pibran is soft, pleasant and quite pretty. Sweet tobacco, earthy notes, smoke, iron and cedar add attractive savory underpinnings. Bright and a bit tightly wound, the Pibran could use a bit more time in bottle for the tannins to soften. The 2014 Pibran is a bit unusual in that the blend is 70 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 % Merlot rather than the more typical 50/50. Drinking range: 2017 - 2026 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2017)
Bright dark crimson. Firm tannins and an unusual blend thanks to hail. Dry finish. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Mar 2015)
Château Pibran
Château Pibran, now under the guidance Christian Seely and the AXA-Millesimes team, produces with good complexity, weight and concentration. Its 9.5 hectares of vineyards stretch across a well-drained gravel bank and border those of Mouton-Rothschild, Lynch-Bages and Pontet Canet. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The wines are vinified at Pichon-Baron. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the wine is matured for 12-15 months in barriques (50% new). Pibran is classified as a cru bourgeois but is now producing wines the equal of many of its more highly classified neighbours.
