COTEAUX DU LAYON BEAULIEU
2014 L'Anclaie Château de Pierre Bise
|Village||Coteaux du Layon Beaulieu|
'Sélection de Grains Nobles' from Chenin Blanc harvested at the peak of botrytisation. The Papin family's vineyards are picked over several weeks and fermented long and slow to produce some of the world's great sweet wines which are balanced by the powerful natural acidity of the Chenin grape. Intense, long and unforgettable. L&S (Nov 2018)

An old favourite from Anjou. Deep, bright, bronzey-gold. Toasty, pungent nose that is more expressive of Chenin than of sweet wine. Then on the palate there is a lovely satin-swoosh of very sweet buttery tarte-Tatin juice and just enough acidity. Really quite vibrant and beautifully composed. You could happily sit and sip this on its own as it finishes reasonably dry but it could also go very happily with fruit and creamy desserts. Very well done. Château de Pierre Bise
Claude Papin has been joined running this famed estate by his son Rene and the team seem to be seamlessly continuing the great work at the Château de Pierre Bise that has rightfully built their great reputation. They like to focus on getting the ripest and most botrytised grapes possible by harvesting non-stop for two months, fri the sweet wines only taking the rot-affected grapes on each of several passes down each row of vines. For the dry wines they are looking for fully mature polyphenols and thin mature skins to add complexity and a pure intensity. The Labour intensive process continue and also in the winery, in prolonging the fermentations for as long as possible to achieve the greatest purity and freshness of expression in the wines. (If you ask Claude he will explain that it is all to do with the correct polymerisation of the polyphenols). In doing this he completely avoids the wet-sheep smell that dogs many Chenin wines in the Loire, and produces a range of wines from different terroirs which are among the great sweet wines of the world at some of the lowest prices for this style.
The Loire Valley is overlooked at this time of year, but really is the total quintessence of Christmas feast wine. Crémant de Loire is a fantastic Champagne alternative, boasting many of its cousin’s toasty, honeyed brioche flavours. Muscadet and Pouilly-Fumé are not only incredible with smoked salmon, cheese nibble or any of the snacks you might have prior to dinner, but also are absolute table pleasers (who doesn’t love a refined Sauvignon Blanc…) and Cabernet Franc is a grape which, in both these guises, is perfect with turkey. Our Anjou rouge is bright red berry, like your cranberry sauce and our Chinon, more savoury and rich, for when the gravy goes on.
Finish this off with a well-aged bottle of Coteaux du Layon, one of the world’s great sweet wine appellations. It’s not only affordable, but creamy, buttery and not nearly as cloying as some of the more traditional options.
