FRIULANO

2014 Collio Azienda Agricola Visintini

Grapes Tocai Friulano
Colour White
Origin Italy, Friuli Venezia Giulia
Sub-district Collio
ABV 13.5%

These are not bold and flashy wines - but it is all about the fruit profile. Long and very slow maturation on the vines has left great precision and definition to the fruit and also emphasises the lovely mineral expression that can be found in wines from this region. This is delicate with clean lines, lots of lovely crisp fruit, citric notes - clean and lithe - very moreish. 2014 was a tricky season, as anyone holidaying in Northern Italy will testify. Oliviero was very worried as the season trudged along - but thankfully with no major head-aches the fruit was saved. Drinking range: 2014 - 2017 Rating: 88-92 L&S (Jan 2017)

Azienda Agricola Visintini

Founded in 1973 by Andrea Visintini, this twenty-four hectare estate has vineyards in Collio, Collio Orientali and Grave del Friuli, and is now controlled by the new generation of Oliviero and his twin sisters Cinzia and Palmira. The wines are beautifully made, each with wonderful expression of both the grape and the 'terroir'. Vineyard practices are now entirely biodynamic, and certified this year. These wines are also extraordinarily good value in what is generally a highly priced region. With the 2014 vintage the family have unveiled the brilliant new labels for each of the wines - with the beautiful botanical drawings of flavours or fruits that relate to the flavour profiles in each different varietal. The wines are great too - in a far from straightforward vintage - beautiful fruit definition and lovely bright minerality.

This 25ha biodynamic estate is planted mainly with indigenous grape varieties. Each label has a beautiful botanical drawing of flowers related to the grape, and prunus dulcis - almond - was selected for this one. It has great texture and creaminess on the long, dry palate. Rating: 90 Christelle Guibert, Decanter (Jun 2017)
