20% Cabernet Franc, 80% Merlot. Short gentle extraction here by Denis Durantou results in a lovely layered wine, a bright, lifted core of gentle purple fruit and violets. Such a super texture. Great drinking. Rating: 91-91 L&S (Apr 2015)

The 2014 La Chenade has a reserved but well defined bouquet with earthy red and black fruit, hints of truffle oil and sage, gaining a little intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm and quite strict tannin. This is rather aloof and distant and yet it is undeniably well defined and fascinating, a Pomerol that clearly needs some bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, vinous.com (Mar 2018)
My recent blind tasting of 239 Bordeaux 2014s highlighted quite a few bargains. One of the most obvious was La Chenade 2014 Lalande-de-Pomerol that was a wine of week last year. It impressed the group of 20-odd wine professional tasters to such an extent that it was bettered only by Roc de Cambes in a flight of Pomerols and the like that included Fleur de Gay, Bon Pasteur, Petit Village, Croix de Gay and Nénin. This luscious wine from Denis Durantou of Chateau L'Église-Clinet is still thoroughly recommended.. Jancis Robinson MW OBE - www.JancisRobinson.com (Mar 2018)
Sweet and gamey on the nose. Then quite a bit of acidity on the palate but enough forward fruit to charm. What’s not to like ??!! GV Drinking range: 2018 - 2023 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson MW OBE - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2017)
The 2014 La Chenade, Denis Durantou's entry-level wine from Lalande de Pomerol, is quite silky and expressive, with plenty of nuance to match its mid-weight, succulent personality. Sweet red cherry, plum, mint and spice are laced into the inviting, pretty finish. There is plenty to like here. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Rating: 87-90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2015)
The La Chenade 2014 is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from gravel soils, picked September 24-29 and October 17-21, respectively. Matured in 30% new oak, it has a slightly simpler bouquet compared to Denis Durantou’s Saintayme, but still very pure with blackberry and hints of undergrowth, a light marine influence coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with veins of dark chocolate on the entry, the oak probably needing a little more time to fully integrate than the Saintayme. It segues into a spicy and slightly austere finish that should gain more flesh during its élevage. Drinking range: 2016 - 2022 Rating: 88 - 90+ Neal Martin, www.robertparker.com (May 2015)
Reflecting the sandier soils on which it is grown, La Chenade is often the lightest and most "feminine" wine in Denis Durantou's portfolio. This is very scented indeed, with refreshing acidity framing raspberry and wild strawberry fruit. The 30% new oak adds a sheen of vanilla spice. Drinking range: 2018 - 2022 Rating: 91 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Apr 2015)
One of the brightest stars of Pomerol is undoubtedly Denis Durantou of the highly acclaimed Château l’Eglise-Clinet. Thankfully this glory is not enough for Denis and he also has a smaller estate in the less esteemed Lalande de Pomerol. Here Denis' skill and experience can produce magnificent wines that are a fraction of the price. The property is Château les Cruzelles, where he makes both Les Cruzelles but also La Chenade, another Lalande-de-Pomerol cuvée from the younger vines. He was even making this with Cruzelles’ grapes before he bought the estate in 2000. We champion this wine every year on primeur as it represents such consistently good value for money. Beautiful Bordeaux wine at an incredibly fair price - a rare gem.
