MAZOYÈRES CHAMBERTIN

2014 Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

A more forceful style. There is tannic force, but it's not just that - this has drive and is bursting with energy:- a touch ferocious (but in an attractive way!) Very grown-up wild hedgerow fruit. Very long, great potential. Drinking range: 2025 - L&S (Nov 2015)

75cl bottles (case of 6)

Full dark red. Strong smoky minerality on the nose, with raspberry and spice notes emerging with air; less subtle than the Charmes today but more satisfying and expressive. Plush, fat and sweet on the palate, with the dark raspberry, spice, licorice and black pepper flavors currently dominated by saline minerality. Seriously dense, rich wine with a rising, palate-staining finish that throws off notes of underbrush, tobacco, iron and spices. The noble tannins owe largely to the high percentage of millerandé berries. A superb showing for this wonderfully silky wine, which will probably be for drinking after the Charmes. Drinking range: 2024 - 2036 Rating: 94+ Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Mar 2017)

100% whole bunch. Dense crimson. Rather opulent nose. Gouleyant and so gorgeous! Fresh yet sumptuous. Savoury edge. Very fine tannins on the end. Redcurrants. Long and one could drink this earlier if you were in a hurry. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 18 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2016)

As is usually the case with this wine it is much more deeply pitched and more obvious Gevrey in character with its pungently earth and animale aromas of various red and dark berries that are trimmed in subtle spice and sandalwood nuances. There is excellent volume and power to the full-bodied and muscular flavors that terminate in a very firm, deep and impressively persistent finish. This isn't particularly refined but the complexity is impressive. Drinking range: 2029 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2016)

Picked a week later than the domaine’s Charmes-Chambertin, this 0.7 hectare parcel is located in a cooler site towards the top of the Grand Cru. Scented, fine and crisp with juicy strawberry and raspberry fruit, refreshing acidity and subtle whole bunch spice. Another wine that you want to drink now, but that will repay cellaring. 2019-30 Drinking range: 2019 - 2030 Rating: 98 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Jan 2016)

The 2014 Mazoyères Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has a very precise bouquet, similar to the Charmes-Chambertin, though the fruit here is a little darker and revealing attractive star anise scents with aeration, though very discrete. The palate is very well balanced and harmonious, just a little wood to be integrated on the finish; which is quite linear and structured with good length. It is somewhat reserved at the moment and I wonder whether the Charmes-Chambertin has the edge in terms of personality. We will see! Drinking range: 2019 - 2035 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2015)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
